The ‘secular culture’ of youth work training: A research launch event

This new research illuminates the place of religion, faith and spirituality in JNC-recognised youth work training courses in England. The authors surveyed the leaders of 30 youth-work courses and analysed course descriptions available online, seeking to understand where religion, faith and spirituality are present and absent, and how they are perceived.

You can join an event on 19th May to hear Dr Naomi Thompson (Goldsmiths University) and Dr Lucie Shuker (Youthscape Centre for Research) share the findings of the research, exploring the role of religion, faith and spirituality in youth work training on JNC recognised youth work courses in England.

A message from the authors:

Dear Colleagues,

Some time ago, we asked many of you to take part in a survey about the presence of religion, faith and spirituality in the curricula of JNC-recognised youth and community work programmes.

We were delighted with both the quantity and richness of the responses we received and are very grateful to all who took part.

We had responses from 25 of the 27 English institutions offering JNC-recognised programmes in 2019, covering 30 JNC-recognised UG and PG programmes. In addition, the breadth, quality and honest reflection in the responses gave us rich data that it has been a real pleasure to work with in piecing together a picture of how religion, faith and spirituality are present and absent, and in what ways, on our programmes.

We will soon be launching the report and will share a digital copy with you when it is ready. We would also like to send you all a hard copy of the report when we have these printed so please do send me your postal address if you would like to receive one.

We would like to invite you and your colleagues (please do share widely) to an online launch event on Wednesday May 19th at 1.30pm where we will present the project’s findings and invite discussion as to its implications for our training programmes.

Naomi and Lucie
