APPG Youth Affairs Publishes Interim Report of Progress since 2019 Inquiry

Sent on behalf of Jo Gideon MP and Lloyd Russell-Moyle MP

Dear Colleague,

The APPG on Youth Affairs published our landmark report on youth work in England, after a year-long inquiry including parliamentary hearings, site visits and written evidence.

Two years on, we are carrying out a short review of progress made against the 2019 recommendations, and to update our findings as part of Covid-recovery. This follows a recent DCMS-led review of policies and priorities for young people and youth services, in advance of the government's spending review in the autumn. The government will also resume shortly its formal review of statutory guidance for local authorities to secure sufficient youth services.

In our review to date, we have heard from young people and youth sector representatives, Local Government Association, Children's Commissioner for England and DCMS Minister for Civil Society, Baroness Barran. We are pleased to attach the interim report and would welcome any comments or questions you may have over the summer recess.

An APPG forum will be held in September for MPs, Peers and young people to discuss the findings. This will be hosted online (by zoom) on Tuesday 14th September, at 6.00-7.00pm. Please hold the date in your diary. A final copy of the report will be circulated for publication in October after Parliament returns from conference recess.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. We are being supported by the National Youth Agency in carrying out this work, should you wish to have further information or to feedback directly over the summer: jonathanh@nya.org.uk

Yours faithfully,

Jo Gideon MP, Chair

Lloyd Russell-Moyle MP, Co-Chair (Youth Work)

YMCA England & Wales and British Youth Council jointly act as the secretariat for APPG on Youth Affairs.
